Cartagena is the postcard of Colombia’s Caribbean coast: fortress walls, bright Centro Histórico, and beaches. For multi-month relocation it fits selectively: heat, humidity, and tourist prices wear you down faster than Medellín. For 1–3 weeks it’s excellent; for half a year people often treat it as a second base with trips elsewhere, not the only city.
Climate
Hot and humid almost year-round: days often 30°C+, warm nights too. Water, SPF, hat, light clothes for daytime walks. Sun is harsh for fair skin; dehydration and heat stroke are real risks.
Best beach window — dry season (roughly December–March). Rainy months bring short but heavy showers; mosquitoes are more active — repellent and dengue awareness: Healthcare.
Neighborhoods
Centro Histórico
Colonial core inside the walls: beautiful, loud, expensive. Fine for tourists; hard for remote work by day due to heat and crowds. At night — pickpockets and “guides” at the gates.
Getsemaní
Next to the center: street art, bars, young vibe. Noisy at night; choose courtyard-facing windows and check entry security reviews.
Bocagrande / Castillogrande
High-rises by the sea, supermarkets, city beaches. More “resident” format for months of work + sea, but without colonial atmosphere and with resort-level rent.
Manga / other residential
Sometimes cheaper than Bocagrande towers. Check case by case: transport to center, noise, estrato.
Cash exchange rates in tourist zones are worse than in Bogotá: Finance. No crypto exchanges in town — usually Bogotá: Cryptocurrency. Long-term rent: Housing.
Daily life and safety
The city is built for cruise and beach tourism. Taxis only via apps. Don’t carry phone and camera visibly by the walls or on the beach. Street “guides,” “special tours,” and “cheaper at the pier” offers are classics: SCAM, no dar papaya.
Internet in decent apartments is OK, but old houses in the center may have weak Wi‑Fi and outages. For remote work test speed upfront and keep mobile data: Mobile.

Islands and day trips
Islas del Rosario
Day tours from the pier; use a verified operator (hotel / GetYourGuide / reviews), not a random beach broker. Allow time for return and sun protection.
Playa Blanca / Barú
Popular beach; infrastructure and cleanliness vary — read recent reviews. Don’t leave belongings unattended.
Farther along the coast
