Typical routes
7–10 days (first visit)
Medellín 4–5 days (city + Guatapé) → fly to Cartagena 3–4 days (walls, Getsemaní, Rosario islands). Or Bogotá 3 days + Medellín 4–5 days if the capital + hub matter more than the sea.
2–3 weeks
Medellín as base + Guatapé / Santa Elena + coffee triangle (Salento / Filandia / Pereira) + 4–5 days Caribbean (Cartagena or Santa Marta + Tayrona Park). Add Cali if you want salsa and heat without beach tourism.

Between cities
Plane
Avianca, LATAM, Wingo, Satena. Bogotá–Medellín ~1 h, Medellín–Cartagena ~1.5 h. Tickets: airline sites, Google Flights, sometimes cheaper via local promos. Domestic flights often beat long buses on time and nerves.
Bus
Terminales (Medellín — Terminal del Norte / Sur, Bogotá — Terminal Salitre). Companies like Expreso Brasilia, Bolivariano, Flota Occidental. Overnight saves a hotel but is tiring; keep valuables in carry-on at your feet, not in the luggage hold.
Airport ↔ city
Apps only (Uber / DiDi / Cabify), not “help” at the terminal exit. More: Transport.
Cash for the road and exchange — in Finance. For remote trips keep eSIM / local SIM with data: Mobile.
Popular day trips
From Medellín
Guatapé + El Peñol (day), Santa Elena / Piedra del Peñol, coffee tours in Antioquia, sometimes Santa Fe de Antioquia. Caribbean — by plane.
From Bogotá
Zipaquirá (salt cathedral), Villa de Leyva (weekend), sometimes coffee region via Pereira/Armenia. To Medellín — short flight.
Caribbean
Cartagena (walls, Rosario), Santa Marta + Parque Tayrona (book entry ahead in season), Barú island / Playa Blanca — check recent reviews on cleanliness and transport.
Coffee triangle
Salento, Valle del Cocora (wax palms), Filandia, Pereira/Armenia as hubs. Convenient between Bogotá and Medellín or as its own trip block.
Parks and national parks: check current entry rules on Parques Nacionales. Some zones (especially near borders and remote regions) aren’t for improvised solo trips — follow current advice and local guides.
Safety on trips
- Same formula as in the city: no dar papaya — phone not on the map in the middle of the street, valuables not on display.
- Tourist zones (Centro Histórico in Cartagena, Poblado, stops at El Peñol) — higher pickpocket density and “friendly” offers. Don’t take street taxis after a tour.
- Overnight buses and island piers — tickets and boats only through a clear operator/hotel, not a random beach broker. Schemes: SCAM.
- On the coast and in Tayrona — mosquitoes, SPF, water. Healthcare and seasons: Healthcare.
