Climate and altitude
The city sits in the Aburrá Valley at about 1,500 m. Temperatures are usually 18–28°C year-round — hence “eternal spring.” Evenings are cooler; a light jacket helps.
Seasons: dry (December–March) and rainy (April–May, October–November). Rain is short but heavy — keep an umbrella or rain shell in your bag. For daily life the difference matters less than on the coast.
Neighborhoods to live in
El Poblado
Main expat district: cafés, coworking, nightlife, Airbnb. Convenient for the first weeks, but noisy, pricier, and more of a bubble. Many move out for long-term stays.
Laureles / Estadio
Quieter than Poblado, cafés and parks, good for long-term living. Popular with people who’ve settled and want less tourist vibe.
Envigado / Sabaneta
Southern municipalities in the metro area: quieter and often cheaper. Metro or bus to the center.
El Centro / Prado
Cheaper, but less comfortable for newcomers on safety and noise. Check the block and estrato carefully.
Locals actively discuss gentrification: Airbnb growth and foreign influx pushed rent in popular barrios. Starting in Poblado makes sense, but look for annual contracts in Laureles / Envigado — see Housing.
Transport and daily life
Metro + metrocable is rare for the region and a useful mental map of the city. Get a Cívica card at stations. For trips around town — Uber / DiDi / inDrive; at night app taxis are safer than hailing on the street.
Internet is stable in good neighborhoods; coworking and Wi‑Fi cafés abound in Poblado and Laureles. Communities: MDE Community and chats.

Cons
Tourist zones = higher prices, gentrification, more scam scenarios. Don’t flash your phone on the map in the street, skip expensive watches, be wary of random “invitations.” See no dar papaya, SCAM, and Crime.
