Sport in Colombia

Gyms, the street, and who to train with

In Colombia sport is not only the gym. On Sundays cities give streets to cyclists (Ciclovía), people run hills at dawn, and in the evening bars discuss football louder than politics.

Below - how gym chains work, where to train without a membership, what to do outdoors, and trainers from the community list. Choosing a trainer is your responsibility.

Gym: dumbbells and weight area

Gym chains

The simplest start for a relocator is a chain gimnasio. Two names you see in almost every major city:

Smart Fit - mass-market chain, many locations in Medellín, Bogotá, Cali, and the coast. Plans are usually “Black” / basic; trial day or first-month promo is common. Gyms open early and late - handy across time zones.

Bodytech - a step up: more space, group classes, sometimes pool and sauna depending on club. More expensive than Smart Fit; worth it if you go often and want “everything in one place”.

Nearby you will find Sportfit, local boxing and CrossFit boxes, yoga and pilates studios - via Google Maps and neighborhood Instagram. Before paying for a year ask about congelación (freeze) and cancellation fees: terms differ by chain.

Payment is often card or PSE; passport/cédula requested at signup. Day pass exists but not everywhere - check front desk or the chain app.

Street and hills

Running up outdoor stairs

Medellín: dawn climbs on Cerro El Volador, Las Tres Cruces, trails around Parque Arví (Metro Cable). El Poblado and Envigado fill with runners in the evening - but do not flash your phone on empty stretches.

Bogotá at ~2,600 m: first runs should be shorter, heart rate higher. Classics - Simón Bolívar, trails near Monserrate (water and pace if you go up), bike lanes along main axes. Sunday - Ciclovía: dozens of kilometers of car-free streets, bike rental at points along the route.

Cali and Cartagena - heat and humidity: morning or late evening. By the sea - swimming and beach volleyball; in Cali - salsa as its own “sport” if you want cardio without a gym.

On runs and Ciclovía do not hold your phone out “for maps” - classic target for moto theft: no dar papaya. Running and cycling groups: Community and Meetup.

Cycling and team sports

Cyclists on a highway

Colombia is a cycling nation. In cities find rental and group rides via Instagram and chats; helmet and lights are mandatory. For mountain routes outside the city take a guide or local group - solo rides in unknown areas are not for month one.

Football on a stadium pitch

Football is the country’s background noise. Tickets for Atlético Nacional, Millonarios, América de Cali - through official club channels; for derbies better go with someone who knows the section. Pickup games (pichanga) assemble in neighborhood chats - an easy way to meet people outside a bar.

Tennis, padel, squash - in clubs and residential complexes; padel is especially popular with nomads now. Pools - at Bodytech/hotels/condos; ocean and public pools depend on the city.

Trainers

Note: choosing a trainer is your responsibility. The list below is from the community guide, shared for fair competition. Trainers: to be added, message on Telegram - it is free.

Personal training is often found via gym Instagram or word of mouth: WhatsApp, confirm language, price per session, and where you train (gym / home / park). Contacts already in the source guide:
