Extending for another ~90 days without a visa — online through Migración. In chats this is often called “tourist stay,” “#90days,” “visa run.” Below: how to file and what this is not, so you do not confuse it with a visa or migration status.
Do not mix up: tourist stay ≠ visa ≠ migration status
Tourist stay / PIP
Permiso de Ingreso y Permanencia — entry stamp/permission from Migración at the border for citizens of countries without a required visa. Usually up to 90 days on entry. This is not a Cancillería visa or residency.
Tourist extension / PTP (prórroga)
Online extension of an existing PIP for roughly another 90 days. Total PIP+PTP — no more than 180 calendar days in one calendar year. Form: Registro en línea Migración.
Tourist visa (Visa tipo V, etc.)
Separate Cancillería document for those who need a visa in advance, or other categories. Filed on the visa portal — a different track, not this page.
Migration status (Nomad / M / R + cédula)
Long-term legalization: nomad visa, residency, cédula. See Nomad visa. A 90-day extension does not replace a nomad visa and does not give you a cédula.
In daily life all three get lumped together as “visa.” For Migración they are different regimes — a wrong form choice means refusal or a fine.

What to keep in mind
When to file
Apply roughly one month before your current 90 days end. The process is slow; there is almost no way to rush it.
Return ticket
You must attach proof of departure. Migración wants to see you will leave legally: a flight before the new 90 days end (they often check 2–4 days before the extension ends). A short hop (e.g. to Panama) is enough. Return/cheap tickets are popular — fake bookings are risky.
Weekends and holidays
Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and public holidays — your application may sit idle. Build in buffer time.
After submission
First a response on the application, then a payment link a couple of days later.

Visa run at year end
You can leave and re-enter near the calendar year change: a fresh PIP up to 90 days plus another extension option. The 180 days per calendar year PIP/PTP cap still applies — within one year “resetting” is not unlimited.
